The first operation shell is placed on the finishing mandrel for further processing. The shell still has some ‘workability’ and the metal spinner takes the partially formed shell and continues to draw the shape up the mandrel. In this stage he tries to work the material in such a way that when it is in its final position, it is hard enough to be strong and resist denting, but not so hard that it is brittle or stressed to the point of breaking. It takes skill and experience to be able to ‘feel’ the condition of the material and compensate where necessary to achieve an evenly& properly stressed, consistent thickness finished product. The correct amount of stress in the finished shell gives it tensile strength and durability.
