Local
Craftsman Gets National Media Exposure for Handcrafted Copper Bowls
Canadensis,
Pennsylvania, USA - July 26th
2010 - Home and Garden Television (HGTV - Scripps
Networks,
Knoxville, TN) contracted Rich Cantor, owner
of Cantor Designs,
Canadensis PA , to
produce
copper bowls for the new series ‘The Outdoor Room’ hosted
by
Jamie Durie, noted landscape designer from Australia. A video
shoot was completed in Cantor Designs’ metal spinning studio that
documented
the traditional ‘old world’ skills used to create the copper bowls.
A portion of the video documentary is included in the series currently
airing
episode named
‘Indian Serenity’.
The 35" hanging
copper bowls were
incorporated into a new outdoor room design based on Jamie's travels to
India. Using hand tools & a vintage metal spinning lathe, Cantor
Designs produced the hand spun solid copper bowls that are featured in
the
episode by forming 42” disks of sheet copper over a wooden form
as they both rotated on the lathe. With
the team of Stix Productions
(Blairstown, NJ) set up in the studio, the cameras rolled as Rich and
his
assistant Terry used hand tools to shear, form, trim, heat, cool, roll
and sand
the copper into the finished planters that were incorporated into Jamie
Durie’s
Indian inspired design.
HGTV’s release schedule for the
second season of the show
‘The Outdoor Room’ coincides with Cantor
Design’s move into a larger production space located in
the historic
‘Old Engine Works’ mill complex in Stroudsburg PA.
“The HGTV exposure and the move to
Stroudsburg are next steps in the growth of the company.” Mr. Cantor states, “The national visibility from the
relationship with ‘The Outdoor Room’ and the move to the Engine Works
complex
will increase our sales & production efficiency, permit larger scale
projects to be undertaken and lead to both the retention and creation of
the
skilled jobs our area needs to prosper.”
